The subject is monumentally important, the cinematography superb, the cast and the acting outstanding, and the humorous tone vital and exhilarating, it blows a massive raspberry in the face of those taking life and themselves too seriously. The script is memorable and deeply affecting on both rational and emotional levels, it speaks to the mind as much as it moves the heart with the wisdom, love and wit that pour out of every word. The Young Pope tells the story of Christ, complete with the Second Coming, but a Christ who stepped down from the pedestal that the Church built for him and chose to walk the maze of life with us, or rather within us. The New Pope is a love letter to the Church, John Paul III is the Church itself, lost, depressed and almost at breaking point after a long life of denying itself in the name of a misunderstood sense of obedience and love. But Paolo Sorrentino and his team add a key to the love letter envelope, a way forward for those who have eyes to see and ears to hear, I wonder when the Popes of this world will be ready to open the door that fits that key, if ever. Even if never, there is still hope, after all Lenny dissolved himself into our hearts and, together, we can walk the path, we only need to remember to trust and to smile."
