Memorable and tender." -- Washington Post For fans of A Man Called Ove, a charming, witty and compulsively readable exploration of friendship, reckoning, and hope that traces a widow's unlikely connection with a giant Pacific octopusAfter Tova Sullivan's husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she's been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago.Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn't dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors--until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.Ever the detective, Marcellus deduces what happened the night Tova's son disappeared. And now Marcellus must use every trick his old invertebrate body can muster to unearth the truth for her before it's too late. Shelby Van Pelt's debut novel is a gentle reminder that sometimes taking a hard look at the past can help uncover a future that once felt impossible.

"(Long story) I've often heard book lovers say "I used to read all the time, and then I stopped because x, y or z. And then I read [some book] and I fell in love with reading again!" And I believed it could happen until 3 years passed of me being in a book club and I didnt enjoy reading any more than I had when I started. Until now! It turns out, this was my book. And not saying I didnt enjoy ANY books before this one, but none made me want to read another book, which is really the key. So if you've fallen out of love with reading, keep trying!! Its worth the work to get that passion back :) and check out this book!! Even if you need to do the audio version - the voices are really great, I listened to it sometimes while reading and it's worth listening to even if you've already read it"
"This book was heartfelt and cute. Not really my type of book but I can see why it's popular. I wish the male main character wasn't such a turd... I almost DNFed because I just really couldn't stand his chapters which were a big portion of the book. I could have had a lot more Marcellus (the octopus) chapters."
"What an endearing book with an octopus as one of the many narrators. It is a somewhat simple story with not a lot of intensity and a relatively predictable plot. The ending, however, really made the book for me and increased my rating as I did get a little teary eyed and realized how much the characters grew on me as I read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.75"
