Before there were bats like Shade, Marina or even Goth, there was a young chiropter—a small arboreal glider—named Dusk. . . .It is 65 million years ago, during a cataclysmic moment in the earth’s evolution, and Dusk, just months old, has no way of knowing he will play a pivotal role in creating a new world. What he does know is that he is different from the other newborn chiropters. Not content to use his large sails to glide down from the giant sequoia tree, Dusk discovers that if he flaps quickly enough, he can fly. But this strange gift that makes him feel like an outcast from the colony will also make him its saviour. After most of the colony is savagely massacred by the felids—the earth’s first mammalian carnivores—Dusk must lead his fellow chiropters to a new home, and a new life.Against a tableau of disappearing dinosaurs and the ascent of the mammal kingdom, Oppel has created an adventure fantasy that sets the stage for the birth of the bats, the story of the forebears of Shade, the beloved hero of the Silverwing series. As with all Silverwing books, it is impossible to simply read Oppel’s Darkwing; each of us enters a world of convincing characters, warring theologies, incredible natural history and a story that roars through head, heart and imagination. A tale that can be read as a stand- lone or as a prequel, Darkwing will be a welcome new classic for the millions of Kenneth Oppel fans.

"My personal favourite in Oppel’s bat series. I recently reread it and was pleasantly surprised to see the ways in which it shines. I love the characters and the unique portrayal of evolution in prehistoric times. It’s exceedingly interesting to see the ways in which the different species interact and change. There was never a dull moment, and I found myself crying and laughing alongside Shade in his darkest and happiest moments. "

"After the last dinosaur has died a new order to the animal kingdom swipes across the land. Most of the change being the animals we know now. The story follows Dusk as he's part of the evolution but the rest of his family isnt.
It's a great tale on drastic change and how it will be different for everyone in the end."

"5/5 stars. Honestly such a good book! A lot of parts were brutal af but it was very engaging and well written. I was fully invested in many characters and the "bad guys" were super well written and multi-dimensional too."

"I so often love only the first novel of a series and lose interest completely or gradually as further sequels come out, but not often do I find a series where I like it all the way through and then enjoy the side story or prequel or whatever *even more* than I liked the main series. Darkwing is a much more basic and yet difficult world than its predecessors, and the solutions to its problems must be more natural than the sorts of tricks employed by Shade in the original books which involve much almost supernatural influences. Darkwing's tale of natural adaptation and fighting to survive in a world that is growing more dangerous and changing around the main character was more intense for this refusal to escape to the fantastical this time around. A very enjoyable read if you like creature-tales."
