Rupert Holmes
A New York Times bestseller! From Edgar Award–winning novelist, playwright, and story-songwriter Rupert Holmes comes a diabolical thriller with a killer concept: The McMasters Conservatory for the Applied Arts, “a fantasy academy laid out like a combination of Hogwarts, Downton Abbey, and a White Lotus–style resort” (Los Angeles Times) dedicated to the art of murder where students study how best to “delete” their most deserving victim.Who hasn’t wondered for a split second what the world would be like if a person who is the object of your affliction ceased to exist? But then you’ve probably never heard of The McMasters Conservatory, dedicated to the consummate execution of the homicidal arts. To gain admission, a student must have an ethical reason for erasing someone who deeply deserves a fate no worse (nor better) than death. The campus of this “Poison Ivy League” college—its location unknown to even those who study there—is where you might find yourself the practice target of a classmate…and where one’s mandatory graduation thesis is getting away with the perfect murder of someone whose death will make the world a much better place to live. Prepare for an education you’ll never forget. A “fiendishly funny” (Booklist) mix of witty wordplay, breathtaking twists and genuine intrigue, Murder Your Employer will gain you admission into a wholly original world, cocooned within the most entertaining book about well-intentioned would-be murderers you’ll ever read.

"Neil Patrick Harris reads this book for audio which was exciting, however I just couldn’t seem to get into it. I listened 18% in, it was entertaining reminds me a little of movies like “ The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” vibes. hearing the main character go through such a bizarre experience was intriguing, I may give it another go down the road!"
"I thought this was going to be great, but it was quite the opposite. It doesn’t read easily. I think it’s because the sentences are long winded. The writing was like a high schooler just learned about adjectives and used them at every chance, but also learned about the function in a word document to find synonyms and chose all the ones that made him sound smart (bucolic, cherubic, taffeta).
The book started funny and satirical. I was excited, but I couldn’t even finish. "
"I was expecting this book to be funnier than it was. Though it was lighthearted, it did not make me want to keep reaching for the book. I couldn’t overlook some major contradictions, and the ending was oh-so -perfect for the main characters. It was mildly entertaining, but forgettable. I didn’t particularly care for the characters or the success of their killing. I wish the book was funnier and more thrilling. Overall, it had some redeemable parts and intrigue that kept me to the final page. 3/5"
"I was skeptical at first and not sure what to expect. It was so surprisingly fun and unexpected that I'm not even upset this is an unfinished series. You get lost in the characters and find yourself wishing to be a coconspirator, which you will find is highly frowned upon. Subtle humor will send you into fits of laughter hours after you've read it. I could actually picture the movie or TV adaptation while reading it and was honestly trying to write a screenplay while happily reading this book in front of my own boss. I cannot wait for the second "textbook" to come out and wish that I too could join the McMasters school of deletion. 9/10"
"I loved this! Such a creative and fun book. A backwards murder mystery where you know the expected outcome but not how it happens. The plans unfold as the book continues, going into detail about how specialized schooling helps the “deletists” with their schemes and murderous goals! Very unpredictable, clever, and entertaining. "
