"3.5⭐
I enjoyed this book, but it was a bit of a let down after loving “If We Were Villains” so much. I thought it was well written, and the plot was interesting, but it takes place over a span of ten hours, which I both wasn't expecting and don't know how I feel about. I'm all for fast paced, but some aspects of this ended up feeling somewhat rushed, and the ending fell a bit flat. I liked the characters, and loved the multiple POVs, all of which were very well done, but I wish I could have gotten to know/connect with all of the characters a bit more. Definitely worth checking out, but maybe don't set your expectations too terribly high. "
"Graveyard Shift by M.L. Rio 3/5 ⭐⭐⭐
This is an approved NetGalley ARC review.
You really can't beat M.L. Rio's character work, she makes them all so real and relatable without much time passing. This one in particular has many character POVs but not a flaw in any of them. I will say the story felt a little lacking though, a riff off of T. Kingfishers What Moves the Dead an 'Anything you can do I can do better moment.' But the ending falls flat with no real conclusion and it ends up feeling like a book just getting started instead of wrapping up."
"It’s not a fluke- I officially love ML Rio’s writing. This book was fast and witty and clever and well done and I really liked it. Anything that takes place over a confined period of time is so right up my alley and this book (novella technically) pulled it off well.
I will say the technical science jargon confused me but that was probably on me for not taking my time to understand.
I’m also a little mad at the ending ??? Like I know we’ve set up for what going to happen and I don’t need to see it but I wanted just a little more update as to how the characters progress. It really hammers in the fact that we really are only getting a small slice in these characters lives which I love from an analytical point of view but makes me lovingly frustrated from a reader pov lol
Highly recommend! "
"This book felt very reminiscent of What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher -probably because of the mycological heart of the plot. As someone who read and loved If We Were Villains, I was very excited to see what else M. L. Rio had in store for us. Something that Rio is fantastic at is creating atmosphere and she did not fail to give us great atmosphere in Graveyard Shift. It was eerie and held a dark academic air that I truly adored. The only thing I would have preferred is a longer story. I feel like this particular tale could have really flourished with a larger page count and more of a chance to really dig deeper into the mycology and the consequences of messing with things better left untouched."
