“A book that demands to be read in a single sitting, and through the cracks between one’s fingers. There has never been a horror story quite like this. Josh Malerman truly delivers.” — Hugh Howey, New York Times bestselling author of WoolWritten with the narrative tension of The Road and the exquisite terror of classic Stephen King, Bird Box is a propulsive, edge-of-your-seat horror thriller, set in an apocalyptic near-future world—a masterpiece of suspense from the brilliantly imaginative Josh Malerman.Something is out there . . . Something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remain, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, she has dreamed of fleeing to a place where they might be safe. Now, that the boy and girl are four, it is time to go. But the journey ahead will be terrifying: twenty miles downriver in a rowboat—blindfolded—with nothing to rely on but her wits and the children’s trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. And something is following them. But is it man, animal, or monster?Engulfed in darkness, surrounded by sounds both familiar and frightening, Malorie embarks on a harrowing odyssey—a trip that takes her into an unseen world and back into the past, to the companions who once saved her. Under the guidance of the stalwart Tom, a motely group of strangers banded together against the unseen terror, creating order from the chaos. But when supplies ran low, they were forced to venture outside—and confront the ultimate question: in a world gone mad, who can really be trusted?Interweaving past and present, Malerman’s breathtaking debut is a horrific and gripping snapshot of a world unraveled that will have you racing to the final page.

"Not as impressed as I thought I would be. Still a very good suspenseful horror that did genuinely have me a little anxious at times. Goes more in depth about some of the relations with people in the house than the movie did which I enjoyed. The movie focused more on the journey to the sanctuary, while the book definitely focused more on what happens before. Apparently there is a sequel which I probably won't read. "

"Enjoyed the book very much. Glad that the film took some different directions but enjoyed the book more. There is a little bit of gore and intense moments. Now will need to continue with book #2, Malorie."

"I'm giving this one a five-star. It did everything it was supposed to and then some. It knocked me off of a reading slump that was partly because of a lack of time but also because I just didn't want to read very much. Then came along Birdbox, a book that's meant to lock you in and leave you with no choice but to keep reading. The premise is simple, creatures have invaded Earth, and if a human lays eyes on them, they go mad, cause destruction, and eventually commit suicide. It's a simple idea that the author put a lot of thought into because throughout the novel he builds around his central idea tremendously and in a very believable way. He also raises just enough questions and answers at a pace that hooks you the entire time but leaves you with surprises at the perfect times.
The characters also feel believable, they act like I would think people in an apocalyptic world would act. The main character Malorie especially. The way she has to treat her children is heartbreaking, but her thoughts about it are even more heartbreaking. I think this is a gem. I read 220 of the 270 pages in one day. My hat is on the ground for you Mr. Malerman. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel."

"I really enjoyed the new aspect of this book. It reminded me of the movie A quiet place but reversed. It was interesting to see how people dealt with these creatures. I liked it all the way up to the ending but it fell short. You never find out much about what is going on and then its over. But it did keep my hooked."

"I don’t give out 5 stars lightly. I rarely do. I read this book in 4 days, I could have read it in one day but I need sleep. Highly recommend, it’s definitely hard to put down. If I can make one comparison to the movie it’s that the river takes a bigger part of the story than in the movie."

"This was a reread, and it's just as terrifying as it was when I first read it 2 years ago (even though I knew what was happening). I adore this creepy book, and I hope Malerman writes another horror novel soon."
