From an author “destined to become a titan of the macabre and unsettling” (Erin A. Craig, #1 New York Times bestselling author), a haunting debut—soon to be a Netflix original movie—about two homeowners whose lives are turned upside down when the house’s previous residents unexpectedly visit. As a young, queer couple who flip houses, Charlie and Eve can’t believe the killer deal they’ve just gotten on an old house in a picturesque neighborhood. As they’re working in the house one day, there’s a knock on the door. A man stands there with his family, claiming to have lived there years before and asking if it would be alright if he showed his kids around. People pleaser to a fault, Eve lets them in. As soon as the strangers enter their home, inexplicable things start happening, including the family’s youngest child going missing and a ghostly presence materializing in the basement. Even more weird, the family can’t seem to take the hint that their visit should be over. And when Charlie suddenly vanishes, Eve slowly loses her grip on reality. Something is terribly wrong with the house and with the visiting family—or is Eve just imagining things? This unputdownable and spine-tingling novel “is like quicksand: the further you delve into its pages, the more immobilized you become by a spiral of terror. We Used to Live Here will haunt you even after you have finished it” (Agustina Bazterrica, author of Tender Is the Flesh).

"a decent thriller, definitely had some tense, page-turning moments and the twists were pretty good. the main character got kind of annoying after a while but i’m pretty sure that was intentional in a way, so overall i enjoyed it. "

"After seeing so many positive reviews for this novel, I had to get my hands on it. Just whoa. I loved the interactive elements, the conspiracy, the plot- it all was beyond captivating. This is easily a book someone could finish in a sitting, but I could only read it when the sun was out."

"This book got so much hype on #booktok and yet I was bored. I was waiting for the good stuff to happen and it wasn’t trol the end. But the ending was not so great. I’m pretty sure I’m going to forget what this book was about. And if you ask me in a couple of days what it was about I’m gonna say 🤷🏼♀️ I was was just bored"

"3/5 Stars: Intriguing but Confusing
We Used to Live Here had an interesting premise, and the book certainly kept me on my toes with its constant twists and turns. However, the sheer number of surprises and shifts in the narrative made it difficult to keep track of what was real and what was fictional. At times, I felt lost in the plot, unsure of where things were headed, and the line between reality and illusion became increasingly blurred.
While I can appreciate a story that challenges perceptions, the ending left me frustrated—it felt like it didn’t quite tie everything together or make the earlier chaos feel meaningful. I was hoping for a clearer resolution, but instead, I was left with more questions than answers.
Overall, it was a captivating read at times, but the confusing narrative and unsatisfying conclusion prevent me from giving it a higher rating."

"3.5 - i enjoyed it a lot, especially the first half, but i got a little lost in the final third of the book and i never found my way back to the answers. the ending is extremely up in the air and i do wish it had ended differently but i guess the distortion of reality is the point with books like this. all in all i liked it. listened on audible "
