In this “riveting, atmospheric thriller that messes with your mind in the best way” (Laini Taylor, New York Times bestselling author), three residents of a secluded, seemingly peaceful commune investigate the disappearances of two outsiders.Travis Wren has an unusual talent for locating missing people. Often hired by families as a last resort, he takes on the case of Maggie St. James—a well-known author of dark, macabre children’s books—and is soon led to a place many believed to be only a legend. Called Pastoral, this reclusive community was founded in the 1970s by like-minded people searching for a simpler way of life. By all accounts, the commune shouldn’t exist anymore and soon after Travis stumbles upon it…he disappears. Just like Maggie St. James. Years later, Theo, a lifelong member of Pastoral, discovers Travis’s abandoned truck beyond the border of the community. No one is allowed in or out, not when there’s a risk of bringing a disease—rot—into Pastoral. Unraveling the mystery of what happened reveals secrets that Theo, his wife, Calla, and her sister, Bee, keep from one another. Secrets that prove their perfect, isolated world isn’t as safe as they believed—and that darkness takes many forms. “As spine-chilling as it is beautifully crafted” (Ruth Emmie Lang, author of Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance), A History of Wild Places is a story about fairy tales, our fear of the dark, and losing yourself within the wilderness of your mind.

"I truly enjoyed the beautiful writing style of this book more than anything else about it. The story itself was enchanting and strange in a way that makes it unlike any other books I’ve read so far this year. I love a multi-perspective novel, especially for mysteries and thrillers and in this case I feel like it added so much depth to the story. On a side note- I would love a prequel novel about Travis finding people and solving cases. "

"This book is slow building and very different from what I normally read. If you hang in there it's a good book. I like the ending "

"4.5⭐️
Coming from someone who reads a lot of thrillers this one definitely caught me off guard. The twists in this book are INSANE! I think I’ve found a new thriller author that I like."

"This was extremely hard to get through. There is a large portion of the book that is a direct ripoff of The Village. Once you notice it you cant unsee it, and it destroys the story. As soon as I had enough with the similarities I was ready to put it down. There is a lot of similarities! "

"A dark, dreamy novel that poses the question: what is memory, a tool or a trap? Can something built on falsehood survive? Who are we really, our past or our present, and how do the echoes of ourselves ripple across the lives of others? The prose, poetic and beguiling, lures the reader in, further into a deeper sense of uncertainty and dread, leading to an explosive conclusion. A great read for the beginning of autumn, chilling and surreal with a fiery core. "
