"“There was something both beautiful and terrifying about isolation. It made you feel important and insignificant at the same time.”
Wow, wow, wow, where do I begin?! This started off so strong and then went completely rapid-pace downhill. Grace needs to get away, away from her life and her troubles, and trade both for something else entirely. She needs to be anonymous and go completely off-grid. So a dart thrown on a board lands her usually city-oriented self in rural Dubois, WY, at an Airbnb owned by none other than Calvin Wells.
“I take comfort in the unusual.”
Calvin and Grace are undeniably, instantaneously attracted to one another, with tension of the cat-and-mouse variety, but as time goes on more sinister occurrences begin to mount. Grace becomes more and more certain that she has made the mistake of her life in coming, and remains somewhat of an elusive, hard-to-pin-down enigma as does Calvin. None are completely readable as they each vie for the upper hand through this story told through their dual, differing perspectives. The writing was strong, but the twist was disappointing and the ending left on a rushed note with virtually no explanation for motive or reasoning, which I felt like was one weakness I couldn’t wholly overlook of the story. None of the characters were particularly likable either.
“She was staying in my home and living in my mind. I was consumed by her.”
One thing that remains certain, though, is that Grace is a definite fireball who matches Calvin’s unpredictable, downright unhinged energy till the bitter end to a T. He may have just met his match and only time will tell when all hell could break loose."
"Has the author ever left the city & spoke to a single soul that lives rurally?… No, I assume not. I almost put the book down several times with the attempts of “country” talk.
Aside from that, it’s a bit cheesy & felt predictable. I loathed the catty mean girl act from Charlotte, it was very corny and unrealistic but- the second half of the book was much better.
I had considered the twist at the end so it wasn’t a total surprise but it’s not glaringly obvious like I worried it would be based on the start of the book. Overall, I enjoyed the twist but I feel like there could’ve been a few more hints throughout the book so it wouldn’t have felt rushed
I’m not raving about this book by any means but if you want a nice quick read, this is good. It’s easy to read quickly, whether that’s a good or a bad thing is up to you!
