I am torn between 3 and 4 stars on this one. The movie is funny, it has amazing animation, a mixture of unique art styles, great voice actors (Alec Baldwin is dynamic and hilarious), and a somewhat interesting story. That being said, this film has so questionable dynamics, particularly for young children.
The movie has this strange way of blurring the lines between what is actually happening with the children and what is “make-believe”, but IMO the movie does a poor job having this blurring make any sense with several actions clearly bleeding into the reality of the setting.
To start off, there are quite a few moments of pretend violence/danger between children and babies. Particularly, violent intentions from the older brother directed toward the new younger baby brother. As this is happening, the adults are completely unaffected and often misinterpret the behavior as funny or cute.
It is these moments that made me scratch my head and wonder, “why aren’t the parents doing something to stop the violence between the children?” On top of these moments, there are several moments where the first child is completely and coldly forgotten by his parents now that the new baby has arrived. The apathetic attitude of the parents toward violence between children and their quasi-abandonment of their oldest child’s emotional needs is a lot for young viewers to process. I know the director was attempting to present these things in an overly exaggerated manner for comedic purposes, but I just didn’t find it that funny or tasteful.
Bottomline, the story was okay, not amazing, but exciting and serviceable. The music, art, and voice acting is where the movie really shines. I think it is worth a shot if you are an older viewer or you have children who are old enough to understand the clearly exaggerated comedic choices regarding adult apathy and neglect toward situations that would otherwise call for their immediate empathy and attention.
