"This was so, so, so good. Maybe not as great as the last two Spider-Man movies but pretty darn close. I have only an elementary knowledge of the characters and may have seen part of one of the older movies. But when I saw this was written and produced by Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg, and directed by the same guy who did another of my favs, The Mitchell’s Vs The Machines, I was all in. The animation style is really cool, a great throwback soundtrack and actual teens as the voices. The action is crazy and it’s so funny. Wild that three of the best movies I’ve seen this year have been animated. "
"Adorable movie it has a great message. I did notice it was trying to relate to this generation and sure it was annoying for that, but the film was enjoyable. "

"so i'm writing this while getting a little tipsy in a restaurant nearby the theater; bear with me.
aesthetically i really liked this movie. i love the move away from polished pixar and realistic human textures. you should use animation to do things you CAN'T outside of animated mediums, and this movie is squiggly and sketchy and wonderfully painterly. watch it in 3d for extra appreciation of that element. i'm also appreciative of how bold they were with designs--the human characters definitely got hit a bit with the ugly stick. i don't mind the casting of the turtles, though i wish jackie chan's emotional beats could have been broader. ice cube surprised me by the subtlety of his performance! i was expecting only one particular voice to come out of his character's mouth, and he did an excellent, expressive, enjoyably hammy job.
downsides: the writing isn't great, and i rarely laughed. the turtles don't have that much differentiation in their characters. almost every line references pop culture in a kind of obnoxious way, taking me out of what could be an interesting or genuine moment. spiderverse this is not. i also miss the 2012!TMNT splinter. i wanna chop this splinter's distracting antennae off.
this IS a kid's movie, however, and i think kids would enjoy it. ⭐⭐⭐ and a half."
