Alexia HollisIt was wonderful to be back in the Grishaverse, this time with better characters.
Alexia HollisI really enjoyed the first half of this novel. The characters were frustrating in the most enjoyable way. They reminded me of people I know, for better or worse. The setting was great, and the Shakespeare quotes were fun. (I'm a theater kid: I've performed and read and enjoyed my fair share of the bard's work.) I loved that there was some bi representation. We were on track to a 5 star- easy. The second half, however, was VERY rough to get through. I kept having to come back to read in short bursts because it wasn't as easy to get sucked into. The ending was unfortunately quite predictable. Still a good read- but considering I feel like I was THE target audience for it- I think it fell short and could have been more.
Alexia HollisVery cute. Nothing earth-shattering. A sweet little fall romance that was a quick, easy read.
Alexia Hollis3.5 Nicely written YA thriller! Kept me guessing throughout.
Alexia HollisThe prose was beautiful. I do wish we could have gotten to know more about the characters, and the pacing felt odd- can't put my finger on why. Still a great atmospheric book for the fall.
Alexia HollisI fell in love with Plath's poetry in high school and have been wanting to read this novel for a long while. It was very painful to get through. At times, Esther reminded me of myself after I left college - clinically depressed, feeling like I had no purpose. I remember thinking back then that the only thing I was good at was school, and now it's done. Now what? Yes, there are some problematic things in this novel, some that are a product of their time, i.e., quite a bit of racism. However, many unfortunate themes are still so prevalent in 2024, and they need to be discussed. For this, The Bell Jar is NOT obsolete.
Alexia HollisStunningly written and deeply painful- this memoir will stick with me
