NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this irresistible novel from the author of All We Ever Wanted and Something Borrowed, a young woman falls hard for an impossibly perfect man before he disappears without a trace. . . . It’s 2 A.M. on a Saturday night in the spring of 2001, and twenty-eight-year-old Cecily Gardner sits alone in a dive bar in New York’s East Village, questioning her life. Feeling lonesome and homesick for the Midwest, she wonders if she’ll ever make it as a reporter in the big city—and whether she made a terrible mistake in breaking up with her longtime boyfriend, Matthew. As Cecily reaches for the phone to call him, she hears a guy on the barstool next to her say, “Don’t do it—you’ll regret it.” Something tells her to listen, and over the next several hours—and shots of tequila—the two forge an unlikely connection. That should be it, they both decide the next morning, as Cecily reminds herself of the perils of a rebound relationship. Moreover, their timing couldn’t be worse—Grant is preparing to quit his job and move overseas. Yet despite all their obstacles, they can’t seem to say goodbye, and for the first time in her carefully constructed life, Cecily follows her heart instead of her head. Then Grant disappears in the chaos of 9/11. Fearing the worst, Cecily spots his face on a missing-person poster, and realizes she is not the only one searching for him. Her investigative reporting instincts kick into action as she vows to discover the truth. But the questions pile up fast: How well did she really know Grant? Did he ever really love her? And is it possible to love a man who wasn’t who he seemed to be? The Lies That Bind is a mesmerizing and emotionally resonant exploration of the never-ending search for love and truth—in our relationships, our careers, and deep within our own hearts.

"So good I forgot I read it! To be fair, I read so much that if a cover is different I get excited and check out the book and then immediately I remember that I’ve already read it. Either way-great book about the loves that are meant to be, even if they aren’t always met with the truth."
"Cecily, a journalist, is lamenting her ex-boyfriend, Matthew, at a bar, when she meets Grant and they have instant chemistry. Although Grant moves very slow as much of his time is dedicated to his twin brother who is dying. Their relationship begins to heat up when 9/11 happens and Cecily sees Grants face on a missing persons poster with a phone number to call. She calls for a journalistic interview to discover that Grant is married and she is speaking to his wife, Amy. Amy is not only kind, but befriends Cecily and knows Matthew. In the aftermath of the lie and devastation, Cecily reunited with Matthew who proposes. Right after getting engaged, she discovers she is pregnant, but she does not know if the baby is Grants or Matthews. This forces Cecily to be honest to Matthew about Grant and to tell Amy the truth. Amy admits that their marriage was not well. The wedding is postponed when Matthew learns that the baby could be Grants and Cecily is forced to end the friendship with Amy. Cecily moves out of NY to live with her parents, but writes Grants twin brother one last time to tell him the truth and to try to understand Grant’s reasoning. When she gets a response from Byron, she decides to go visit him only to discover that it is Grant. Byron had died and Grant is in hiding for insider trading. He used the money to help offset his brothers medical expenses. Grant turns himself in and serves his prison sentence. Cecily has the baby, and Grant is the father. Grant moves to Cecily’s hometown and helps to raise the baby and promises to be true to Cecily. He gets a job at a non-profit and does propose to Cecily who agrees. "

"5/10 - the dialogue was often cringy or cheesy, and I felt the ending was very rushed and short. Often moments dragged on that shouldn’t have been, and a lot of the interactions between Grant and Cecily felt weird, but I did think the dialogue was much better for Matthew and Cecily. I did enjoy the plot twist, however it didn’t make up for the other things the story lacked. "
"Absolutely loved this book! Will reread it! "
