"Well I finally watched this. It is weird and gave me Brave New World, one of my favorite books, feelings. It's cruelty towards and strict rules with sexual acts remind me of the Alphas and the Betas in Brave New World. This has a very dry, dark sense of humor, so I immediately understood. "
"4⭐️ Wow. I just exited some messed up alternate reality where everyone’s required to be coupled and loners are hunted down. I can see why people don’t know what to do with this one. When it first released I didn’t either. It’s possibly the weirdest movie I’ve seen and I’m glad to have come around. As a proud self-proclaimed loner I found it hilarious. But in the most deadpan and droll way ever. You could say wry but it’s more earnest than that. Honestly took a bit to fully comprehend this film is a comedy. I guess Colin Farrell wanting to be turned into a lobster didn’t clue me in. In this strange world everyone has the same affect. The characters and overall tone flat and emotionless. The humor is awkward and subtle and comes as a surprise when it hits overtly. With Rachel Weisz’s laconic narration, it reminded me somewhat of The Royal Tenenbaums.
“If you encounter any problems, any tension, any arguing that you cannot resolve yourself, you will be assigned children. That usually helps. A lot.”
Delivered to a newly paired couple by a dispassioned Olivia Colman, this line is when I involuntarily burst out laughing and the lightbulb suddenly went on.
I’m sure the satire label has been thrown and stuck to the wall a good deal and it’s probably apt. I see it as an allegory. Courtship, dating and marriage the desired norm, but also how that quaint process has evolved in the contemporary. Being single is literally like being an animal in the woods. And if you can’t make an ideal match with your perfectly aligned algorithms you’re a failure doomed to relegation of non-personhood in the wilds of singledom. I mean it’s pretty funny when you think about it. But also sad and emotionally violent which this film utilizes in the literal sense, veering from odd to absurd into macabre landing at bewilderingly tragic. It’s definitely not for everyone and I really get that. I appreciated it for being utterly original and crazily weird and not caring a bit if anyone gets it. "

"A strange dry movie that I completely understand someone not enjoying but I really loved it. I saw this with my brother who I think was the perfect person to watch it with because we both really love and appreciate dry/awkward humor which this movie does really well! I like what it says about the almost compulsive need to be in a relationship and how you’ll completely change yourself just to get to that point but really end up isolating yourself even further. A what I think an underestimated film."
"I really feel like I need to rewatch this again before I can give my honest assessment. Definitely unique because it’s so many genres all rolled up into one. Yorgos Lanthimos is definitely known for his originality. The Killing of a Sacred Deer is one of my favorite films from him."
