"I now fully understand why this film won Best Animated Feature. I haven’t gotten so emotional over the first ten minutes of a film since Up. I was tearing up the entire 2 hours both from the heart-wrenching story and the beautiful animation. This entire film is stunningly unique. Everything about it pleasantly surprised me, from the morbid origins of Pinocchio’s creation to the haunting setting of fascist 1940s Italy. It’s a beautifully unexpected film and I adore it. I believe it cemented Guillermo del Toro as one of my top 10 favorite directors of all time."
"So I didn’t expect this to be a musical essentially which was a nice surprise mostly cause the music was really good and fun. I like the whole looking at death, war, and loss through a child’s lens, a child who can never really die himself. It tells you this classic story with beautiful stop motion..I’m a sucker for stop motion and love what people are doing with it and this movie is no exception. I’m just happy stop motion wasn’t swept under the rug and forgotten with the popularity of computer animation and I hope they do more cool things with it. Also the end made me cry like a little baby. 👶🏻👍🏻"
"I've never seen any of the pinocchio movies before, so I went in only knowing hes a puppet that wants to be a real boy and his nose grows when he lies. That said, I kinda dont wanna watch any of the other versions now, because this one was so good. The cultural and historical references made it more real, the art style so unique, and while I wasnt a huge fan of the music, it worked for the film and characters. "
"a unique take on pinocchio. watch out though, because i have Thoughts about how it could have been better.
does it uproot the disney version of pinocchio for me? absolutely not. in my opinion, that's a perfect pinocchio, beautiful animation and colors (tied with tarzan and sleeping beauty for 'best aesthetic'), coherent storytelling, voice acting, etc.
this pinocchio is also interesting to look at and well done on it for that departure from a disney-esque or laika aesthetic. everyone almost looks carved of wood themselves. that said, despite having bold designs and great silhouettes, a lot of those designs are not easy on the eyes.
the story takes place in fascist italy, and in my opinion doesn't do enough with that setting. i would have loved greater expansion on the theme of pinocchio's disobedience to fascism being a strength. the songs are completely melodically unmemorable, despite being beautifully piped by pinocchio. del toro has a habit of leaning on narration to muse philosophically on things or introduce hints of backstory (devil's backbone, pacific rim, crimson peak, pan's labyrinth) and for the most part that's worked for him because he's kept it reserved for the beginning and the end of the movie. here, the cricket DOES NOT SHUT UP throughout the movie and doesn't contribute any new information. for all the times he got squashed, i couldn't help but wish del toro would take a leaf from the book and have pinocchio thoughtlessly murder the cricket for being annoying and mostly pointless.
i also could have stood to see pinocchio die a few more times. but that's because i really liked hanging out with Death.
so yeah, an interesting movie, but i think it could have been improved by going darker (rome open city, anyone?) or going completely batshit and absurd like the original book. good, but could have been MUCH better."
