"It's a shame that Hollywood will take a successful movie like Mean Girls and redo it 20 years later and the only idea they had to try to make it better is to make it a musical. 🤮 That's just a bad idea. It's not all bad though, there are a few laughs to be had. I thought Angourie Rice did a decent job as Cady, and Renee Rapp played a good Regina George but I really enjoyed Auli'i Cravelho and Jaquel Spivey as Janis and Damien respectively. (They were funny.) I didn't care for the new Gretchen and Karen though, not as good as the originals. Tina Fey and Tim Meadows reprise their roles and Lindsay Lohan has a cameo. In my opinion, they should have left this one alone, because it doesn't compare to the original. 5.5/10"
"This was a fun, hilarious adaptation of the Mean Girls musical that really stayed true to the heart of the broadway show while also breathing fresh life into the original source material. Highlights: Renee Rapp could step on me and I’d say thank you. I knew she was gonna kill it because of course she would but she went beyond my expectations. She was sexy, snarky and her high note at the end of World Burn could wake me up from any coma. Auli’i Cravalho was fantastic as Janis. She was just as funny as in the original but also grounded. Also, she belted her face off in I’d Rather Be Me. Jaquel Spivey had me in absolute stitches the entire film, even when he was just in the background, plus he can SING! Get it Damian! As for the remainder of the plastics, I really enjoyed their takes on Karen and Gretchen, but Avantika’s Karen was the real star of the two. Chris Briney was particularly swoony as Aaron in a way the original film couldn’t accomplish. He was dreamy, but also dorky in a cute way that really sold me on the high school crush of it all. His chemistry with Angourie Rice was also 10x better than that of Cady and Aaron in the original film. Speaking of Cady, Angourie was cute as Cady but more on that later. I also loved the little nods to the original film and the fun cameos. As for the bad: the songs. It’s not that they were bad, or even performed badly, but questionable choices were made. As a fan of the musical, I was disheartened to see that they slowed down the music to all the songs. Idk if it was to make them easier to sing but it brought down the movie’s momentum. They also changed the orchestrations to be less musical and more modern which gave them a robotic feel. Luckily the singing evened it out. As for the singing, they really changed the notes and keys for some songs, especially Cady’s. I think they did this because Angourie couldn’t belt like Erika Henningson, but if that was the case, then cast someone who can sing the songs! It was good tho!"
"I loved it. Like the original, they nailed the entire cast. The music pops. Renee Rapp, who I didn’t really care for in The Sex Lives of College Girls, is just absolutely amazing in this role. It sounds weird saying it about this cheesy high school movie, but she was award worthy good. And I’m always down for a musical and trust Tina Fey. "
"The actors chosen for this were perfect! I kinda had iffy feelings towards Karen’s character, but overall everyone blended well with each other. I saw a lot of hate towards Christopher being Aaron, but he did great! I just felt like he did better than what was perceived of him from the trailers. It’s not like the original that was made clear, but it was amusing to watch also it is a musical and the singing isn’t in the whole film, but few scenes and they are watchable. "
