"I had high expectations for this movie, knowing that it was expected to be the best release that Blumhouse has given us since "Blackphone." I have not seen the original Danish movie, so this review is solely based on the American version as a first-time view. I personally thought that the movie went too slow. I kept waiting for the plot to pick up when things got tense, but it didn't... it would get tense, but then it would go back to watching the families eating together. It was also upsetting to see major plot points given away in the trailer... I wish I could say that I didn't watch the trailer, but the movie was so heavily marketed that it was impossible not to. As for my positives on the movie, I did think that it was intriguing. The overall storyline was captivating and the twist that wasn't given away in the trailer was great! I just wish it would have been a quicker pace. I also thought that the acting was great from everyone in the cast. Even the kids! Does it scare anyone else how good James Mcavoy is at playing villains? His performance is by far the best. I do think that it is worth a watch overall. I just thought it was slow and over marketed."
"This one was different for me since I went in a little concerned. This is a remake of a movie that came out a couple years ago. A Danish horror movie that was very dark and didn't really need an update. I wondered what they would change for the American audience. My concerns were misplaced. The concept and basic plot was the same but it plays out in a much different way due to them changing 2 characters...the kids. In the original the kids were not much of a factor however In the sequel they play a major role. I enjoyed this one especially Macavoys performance. However the story didn't have the same impact on me that the original had due to the Hollywood ending. I preferred the darker more grounded original ending. Still a well made movie worth a watch. "Everything in this movie was so beautiful - the setting/scenery, props, the characters (well initially). I was right in guessing there’d be a ‘The Visit’-esque twist, but James McCavoy goes beyond in a fabulous portrayal of a psychopath. I don’t want to say a charismatic one, but feel like part of the movie is also in seeing no evil at first too. It really lulls you in until you’re too deep and things start to get tense, uncomfortable, and disturbing. Nothing too groundbreaking, but well done and worth the watch - if anything for the final scene. Ironically enough, you can find comedic relief in it as well. "
