Speak No Evil

"James McAvoy is one of my favorite actors working today. He gives a stellar performance in this remake of a fairly recent Danish horror film. McAvoy steals every scene he is in. The other actors do a fine job but pale in comparison to his brilliance. I haven't seen the original yet, but I plan to, so this review is solely on the merits of this remake. The first half of the film is dedicated to character development as the tension slowly builds. Things progress at a decent pace and before we know it, the protagonists are in a fight for survival. McAvoy shines brightest when he plays roles as a sinister villain. I'm looking forward to seeing the Danish original, as I hear the ending is different. But this American version is a worthy watch. 8/10"

"Absolutely love, love, LOVED James McAvoy in this. His ability to be creepy was amazing. I loved the little moments throughout the movie that were red flags, and I was glad the curtain wasn't ripped away until the last quarter of the movie, which was excellent. This is based on a 2022 Danish film of the same name and basically an exact remake, so it may also be worth the watch. They even have a little Easter egg hinting towards the original movie, which I thought was nice. "

"When I tell you I wanted to hate this film so much I really mean it. Since I first heard there would be an American remake last year I’ve done nothing but talk crap about it. Speak No Evil was such a great film that I felt didn’t need to be touched. I just never understood why a Danish horror flick that came out in 2022 was being remade a year later. Not to mention like 70% of the movie they are already talk english so I deemed it unnecessary. I just felt like here us Americans go trying to **** up a classic horror movie because we are known for remaking utter garbage. I’m so glad I was wrong and still shocked they were able to actually pull off such a feat. Whoever decided to cast James McAvoy as the antagonist deserves a raise like seriously. Dare I say he’s even better than the guy from the original film. Chef kiss he killed this role, it just seemed like the perfect choice. I really love the fact they didn’t give us a carbon copy of the original. I’m not saying it’s better but it’s damn close. Probably not as dark but just as entertaining. Whether you’ve seen the original or not i highly recommend."

"The plot of this horror movie capitalizes on the idea that people are often too afraid, too kind, or too self-deceived to tell the truth. Instead, we tell white lies and say our niceties to avoid conflict. Themes like that add some concept of realism and cool ideas to this movie. However, if you are a naturally honest person/speak your mind/are headstrong, this movie may frustrate you deeply. At a certain point, I was so frustrated that the main characters were so obviously fake and passive in such a dangerous situation. For the first 1/2 - 3/4 of this movie, the main characters don't do much to solve the problem and are almost comically weak. However, when the action DID get moving, it was suspenseful. James McAvoy is stunning in this, as usual. Not a bad suspenseful thriller if you want something with different scenery, somewhat interesting dialogue, and an air of mystery and suspense. A little deeper symbolism/imagery, more explanation, more anything might've made this movie a 5/5."

"It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what the title of the movie had to do with the plot. This movie kept me on the edge of my seat, and I swear several times I almost lost it with the choices that the main characters made throughout the movie. That being said it's a satisfactory end and the cast was phenomenal."

"I had high expectations for this movie, knowing that it was expected to be the best release that Blumhouse has given us since "Blackphone." I have not seen the original Danish movie, so this review is solely based on the American version as a first-time view. I personally thought that the movie went too slow. I kept waiting for the plot to pick up when things got tense, but it didn't... it would get tense, but then it would go back to watching the families eating together. It was also upsetting to see major plot points given away in the trailer... I wish I could say that I didn't watch the trailer, but the movie was so heavily marketed that it was impossible not to. As for my positives on the movie, I did think that it was intriguing. The overall storyline was captivating and the twist that wasn't given away in the trailer was great! I just wish it would have been a quicker pace. I also thought that the acting was great from everyone in the cast. Even the kids! Does it scare anyone else how good James Mcavoy is at playing villains? His performance is by far the best. I do think that it is worth a watch overall. I just thought it was slow and over marketed."
