Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear. It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do. But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy. There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself. "This story is very slow and building but in a very good way. It never stood still or drug on something was always happening. I feel like it was a big building block for the world and the rest of the story just setting you up for something epic to come. While reading, you are on a journey with the characters learning with them and they world is so well explained it's easy to see it too. I love books like that. Some people forget the world around and I can't place the characters but this was no such book. The story was intriguing, the masks, the slowly realization of magic and strange creatures. It just had a great pace and I love the aspect of seeing both points of view from both main characters."
"This was such a great and captivating book! The world-building was amazing and I just love the characters. I loved how Laia finally came to find strength in herself. I don't know how I feel about the love triangles between the main characters, but they definitely keep the story interesting and making you wish for two to be together. 5/5 🌟 "

"I found the plot and the opposing sides in An Ember in the Ashes to be well thought out and extremely intriguing. I loved the idea of the Masks and the turmoil Elias felt between his loyalty to the system he grew up with and what he actually felt was right. I thought Helene was also a fairly interesting character and I kind of wish she got a pov in this book (after the ending I hope she gets one in the next book). Laia was okay, her character development was very clear by the end of the book I just wish she had pulled me in a little sooner. One of the few things I didn’t enjoy about this book was the love (square?) between the MCs. A few of these relationships seemed underdeveloped and I really couldn’t believe in the chemistry which made this tangle of feelings unnecessary in my opinion."
