Spooky and/or haunting but not overly violent or gory mystery suggestions? I am thinking more like Simone St. James, less like Stephen king. I love ghosts stories but I am not a huge fan of excessive violence. Some is fine because mysteries often involve victims, but I am talking like a fist fight or a fade to black scene, NOT a graphic description of entrails wrapped around their neck like a scarf.

I just finished Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney and I loved it. That book did NOT have any spice in it and I was wondering if the rest of her books are spice Free or if some of them do get spicy? Hey all! I've been into Tony Hillerman's mysteries lately and am looking for similar novels. Some things I particularly like are that Chee is smart, but isn't a super detective because he gets distracted easily or is too friendly with potential suspects. It's very human. I also like that the cultural background and local environment are prominently featured and essential to the books.
