The Tempest

"Pride Day 25: I feel like garbage today so I'm going back into my memory banks to pull a movie out of my ass to avoid having to watch something new. Let's return to Derek Jarman. Now, Jarman almost certainly has a bunch of more appropriate movies for this list from Sebastiane to Caravaggio but I haven't seen those so I'll go with this almost Caligula-esk orgy of homoerotic imagery. It's almost overwhelming and certainly not for everyone as is made apparent by it having one of the most judgemental "parental warnings" I've maybe ever seen on IMDB that I'd probably edit myself if I didn't find it so funny. Personally, I quite like this movie. I consider it one of my favorite direct Shakespeare adaptations as wild as that may seem. Jarman is, as I mentioned in my Blue recommendation, somewhat of a provacateur, and as such this movie is far from perfect. If I remember correctly he has a tendency to use people with atypical bodies to create discomfort (people with deformities, people who are abnormally large or small, gender non-conforming people). This is far from being unique to him as it is somewhat of a trend, however it is something to be cognizant of."
