"still crap but much better than expected, needed to be longer though to truly shine. I can pick up so much subcontext. agape vs storge, tribalism, 1984 for the modern age. feels like a commentary to living the lgbt neurodivergent experience. "

"Starts off a little confusing, but as my wife and mother-in-law said after questioning everything: "this turned out to be really good actually" 😄 Worth a watch."

"Someone else mentioned that this would have made a great series, I agree. There is alot of potential here for expansion. But getting back to this film...it was interesting, and well scripted, it definitely keeps you watching waiting for the details that you find yourself craving. But I found that the story felt abrupt and undeveloped in some aspects. Overall it was entertaining and enjoyable, but I think it could have been fantastic, given the right depth of story. Lexy Kolker is superb!"

- In a nutshell Freaks is a rated R independent 'X-Men movie' so-to-speak. The story is about people who have evolved to have powers that are very dangerous to normal humans, especially when they're young as they cannot control them. In an attempt to flee the population at large, a father, believing his wife to be dead, takes his infant daughter to an abandoned house and creates a time bubble so that time goes on longer inside making the girl seven years old in a matter of weeks. Throughout the movie we learn that the girl can manipulate the minds of others, and when she finds out her mother is still alive she uses these powers to save her. She does this by making people (like malevolent officers) kill each other, and in one scene, makes an officer stab a woman in the eye to create a diversion. By this time it becomes clear that we are meant to cheer for this girl and the family, making it more of a good vs evil story instead of a character study. This is a shame because up until these developments I was genuinely enthralled. Even the violence was, in its own way, plausible. The father-daughter-relationship, the world building, and the scope of the story was mind-blowing. Then it kind of devolves into a race-against-time without exploring the horror of what this little girl must be going through in the story. This movie seemed better than making people into "bad guys" so that killing them would be easier to accept. It's unfortunate because it does seem to have a sensitivity through the character of the father to not be that kind of movie. Then it gives up on that. Somehow watching a small girl do these things in the manner she does them without acknowledging it makes me extremely reluctant to rate it highly, even if it is very well made.
+ Freaks IS very well made. The acting, the low-budget camera style, the premise, and the build is near flawless. Even the low-budget SFX works. It deserved a more thoughtful ending."

"What a strange movie! It definitely didn't go where I expected it to. The little girl looks like a young Drew Barrymore. "
