Nhaya HenleyI read the blurb of this book at a comicon convention and I immediately bought the book right then and there. What I didn’t realize was that it was a series and that I had committed to a trilogy😭 When I read it, it was a little different than what I was expecting (in terms of the main character). The world building isn’t bad at all and I really enjoyed the POV’s of the FL and ML. The only thing I’m really struggling to determine whether I like or not is the MC herself. She has these really cool powers that definitely have room to be explored in the 2nd and 3rd books, but I’m not sure I’m a fan of her personality. I can appreciate someone who’s sensitive and empathetic (which she is), but I wish she had a little more back-bone in terms of how everyone—other than her sisters and the ML—treat her. Maybe she begins to grow into herself in the rest of the series? All I can say is that there’s definitely room for character development. I’m curious to see what the rest of this series brings!

Nhaya HenleyI’ve loved every single book this author has written. This one, though, is probably my least favorite out of all of them. It’s not that this book is bad or anything, it’s actually quite wholesome. I just found that I didn’t connect with the characters like I have with Lukens’ other books. Even when emotional parts of the story took place, I just had this kind of disconnect which made it hard to empathize with the characters and their situations. I don’t have much else to say, other than that I thought the dialogue between the two main characters was cute and the concept of the book was there. Would’ve liked to know a bit more about the magic system and how it came to be!🙂‍↕️

Nhaya HenleyEven though this book is considered a part of the Fantasy-romance genre, there were so many plot twists😳! Characters who I originally hated, I have grown to love and characters who I loved I now hate (although hate is a bit of a strong word). Without giving out any spoilers, I can say that trauma was a large theme in this book and was beautifully written in a way that makes you deeply empathize and relate to the characters. The love story that goes on is everything you could ask for in a book: at times, it can be spicy, and others it can be so heartwarming and wholesome. This may be a hot take for some, but I’m of the belief that the only reason you read the first book is to get to this one. It’s. That. Good. A little tip for anyone reading this book: it ends off on a cliffhanger, so be sure to have the 3rd book ready or die in suspense of what’s about to happen next🫡.

Nhaya HenleyI just finished the last book of this ✨series✨ and I’m so happy that I did! This book, more than any other book in the series, was filled with a great balance of spice🌶️ and wholesomeness🥹. Most of this book takes place post-ending which wraps the story up quite nicely! Something of an added detail the author really indulged in was the pov’s of different characters. For the whole series, we were placed in the shoes of the main character and it was really refreshing to see how other characters view the world of Scum Villain. What sold me was the fact the these characters and their relationships were explored and flushed out. It really goes to show that there is so much to these characters than what’s originally told within the plot of the story. It adds so much more depth and flavor to these 2D characters and I’m glad that MXTX (the author) dedicated a whole book to it! There’s so much I would love to talk about, but I’m inclined to believe that this is a series you should experience reading rather than being told what happened. I hope that if you got anything from this review, it’s that you should grab a copy of this series because it was so worth every penny that I spent on it at my Barnes and Noble☺️😆

Nhaya HenleyThis book was, like its predecessors, hilarious and a joy to read. As was expected from what I gathered from the 2nd volume, this book goes in to detail about both main character’s backstories and where they came from. Something I was really surprised by (and was grateful that it was elaborated on) was the kind of trauma that Binghe deals with throughout the novel. Spoiler but to be expected was his issue with abandonment and feeling unloved by the people in his life. The last thing I expected to read about, coming from this kind of book, was an abandonment complex, but it really does go to show how much thought was put into the characters. Another thing I was caught off guard by was the little bit of spiciness at the end🌶️🌶️🌶️. Just be prepared. Overall a really good read and looking forward to the author finishing off this series strong with her last volume😌

Nhaya HenleyI know I’m late to the party but I was finally able to read this book to see what all the hype was about and —let me tell you—it did NOT disappoint. At the beginning, I felt like it was your typical romantasy book, but 3/4 of the way through, I realized just how much I needed to pay attention to the dialogues that took place so I began to mark with tabs and take notes. Everything that’s said has meaning and importance and will make sense as you progress through the story. There were also several points within this book where I audibly gasped and had to set the book down to take breathers; it’s THAT kind of book. Over the duration of me reading this book, there were multiple instances where I did errands with it in my hand and you won’t believe the amount of people who’ve stopped me to say that this was one of their favorite book’s of all time. If that doesn’t tell you what type of book this is, I don’t know what will. If you’ve learnt anything from this review, I hope it’s that you need to pick up this damn book and start reading because you’re missing out if you don’t.

Nhaya HenleyThe storyline of the books in this series are so unpredictable and out-of-pocket (in a good way) and I absolutely adore them for it. This book eludes to a more in-depth look at SQQ (Shen Qingqiu) and his backstory. Although it doesn’t get into his origins quite yet, the book perfectly sets it up to—hopefully—do that in the 3rd book. If you’re reading the reviews trying to decide whether or not to invest the time and money into this series…please do. These books have begun to be a very big source of laughter and bouts of giddiness for me, and they will be for you too. I can’t even count how many times I had to stop reading, only to roll around my bed in giggles or to plaster a wide grin on my face because of the interactions between SQQ and Binghe. Read it, you won’t be disappointed😌.

Nhaya HenleyLately, I’ve been reading a lot of books with a female protagonist so this was like a breath of fresh air. Right off the bat, I can say I loved this book. It’s definitely not for everyone, but it was for me. It’s basically like having a one-on-one conversation with the MC and cheering him along as he went. The characters were hilarious, settings were detailed, and the world-building was spectacular. Though, I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone who dislikes getting deep into Chinese media, lore, and terminology. At many times throughout the book, they reference things that you may not understand and would have to refer to the back of the book where they keep a glossary. If you don’t mind stopping to look up the meaning of random words, this book is for you. I’m so glad I made a Barnes & Nobles run to pick up the 2nd and 3rd books. I’ll definitely be reading the rest of this series😳
