Sarah HuffA haunted house story to scratch that itch

This book sucked me in right away. With the main character, Maggie, dealing with the decades-long repricussions of the Amityville Horror esque book her dad published. They had a similar stay in a house with a bloody past and ended with a terrifying and desperate flight out of the house.

Woven with Maggie's unexpected inheritance of the house after her father's passing, are excerpts from the Book. With the building tension in Maggie's attempt to renovate the house and uncover the truth of the Book, we also get to see the events unfold in the Book. You don't get to learn what happened the night they fled (both the Book version and the truth) until the very end.

The characters are all robust and realistic, hitting that sweet spot that makes nobody a pure hero or a pure villain. You have archetypes like the old woman losing her grip on reality, the hunky construction worker, the oily reporter, but they are all turned on their head.

There's some that's left murky, like the protagonist's age, or what happened to the original owners, but that only adds to the story.

You'll notice I have been very vague about the plot. I think it's best kept that way so you can experience the book the way it was intended.
