"5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Moving. Profound. Existential. Hilarious. Adorable. Suspenseful. Beautiful.
There was so much humor, love, romance, silliness, emotional complexity, mystery, suspense, and lightheartedness in different parts, as well as the theme of the importance of balance, relationships, community, what matters the most in life, and what it means to truly live.
I was amazed at the depth of the storyline, character development, existential dynamics, mindfulness about mental health information, and the portrayal of the dark issues around the complexity of academic institutions, including the competitiveness and ruthlessness in these institutions across country lines and the power dynamics involved in academia and certain professional spaces. This is a conversation that needs to be facilitated and expanded upon.
As someone who has also experienced burnout and hardship from graduate school and the power dynamics involved in the culture, I think we have to reckon with the unnecessary psychological, emotional and physiological toll that these professional fields, universities and professional spaces take on individuals.
The perfectionistic standards and environments cultivated in these prestigious fields, careers, and academic settings are extremely harmful and systemic in nature. The harm can be seen in the statistics of the rates of severe clinical depression, anxiety, and suicidality in individuals who have been pushed beyond what is healthy in these environments.
The only drawback I had around the show, was the excessive use of alcohol in the show and violence for comedic effect regardless of cultural differences, especially if you’re in recovery or struggling with alcohol use.
Spoilers after this point***********
Trigger warnings:✨ Suicidality, graphic imagery, accidental death, medical trauma, depictions of trauma, substance use with lots of alcohol consumption especially, comedic depiction of violence/domestic violence, disturbing scenes, and on.
