"+ EDDIE THE EAGLE is a wonderful underdog story. It's straight out of Disney's playbook, but perhaps more for adults than kids. Eddie is played with such loving innocence and determination by Taron Edgerton who has a gift for going the extra mile into his characters. It's the kind of hammy acting that is more endearing and works to perfection with someone like Hugh Jackman balancing the scales with his more grounded, cynical, antihero portrayal of Bronson Peary, Eddie's unorthodox, reluctant coach. What I like the most about this movie is that Eddie, though full of heart, is not portrayed as the infallible good guy who has all the answers and needs only determination and persistence to achieve his ultimate goal. He doesn't give up in his bid to become an Olympian, but sometimes his determination to prove others wrong gives him tunnel vision and keeps him from seeing the bigger picture. Later in the movie when Bronson tries to explain this to him, Eddie is not immune to needing a lesson in humility. Yet, even when Eddie is in the midst of the lesson, we still want to see him come out the other side and achieve his goal. Dexter Fletcher directs in a lively way that can play with reality, and perhaps presents a less than accurate story, but he does so both to get to the heart of the truth with Eddie, and to make an uplifting movie that feels like a celebration rather than just an underdog movie.
- Plot-wise, there is nothing new. It's like rock songs that follow the 4/4 time signature: it is helpful in learning the form of rock music and can be satisfying, but whereas in music, mathematics can help the band get on the same page and create consistent tempo that we can dance to, movies don't work that way. You can only see it so many times until you can guess what is going to happen. Fortunately this is one of the more satisfying "rock songs" that uses the template to its advantage, but could have had more depth if it had found a way to focus more on story than plot."
"Very sweet. Watch it with your friends AND your family"
