Kristin Hannah
A #1 bestseller on The New York Times, USA Today, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times! From the celebrated author of The Nightingale and The Four Winds comes Kristin Hannah's The Women—at once an intimate portrait of coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided.Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.As green and inexperienced as the men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is over-whelmed by the chaos and destruction of war. Each day is a gamble of life and death, hope and betrayal; friendships run deep and can be shattered in an instant. In war, she meets—and becomes one of—the lucky, the brave, the broken, and the lost. But war is just the beginning for Frankie and her veteran friends. The real battle lies in coming home to a changed and divided America, to angry protesters, and to a country that wants to forget Vietnam. The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era.

"Although I’ve read and watched a lot about the war in Vietnam, The Women made me think about it in a new light. I didn’t know about the critical role so many women played, and it was both eye-opening and inspiring to learn more about the frontline nurses who saved countless lives. It’s a beautifully written tribute to a group of veterans who deserve more appreciation for the incredible sacrifices they made."
"Me reading this 480 page book in nearly one sitting should tell you everything you need to know. Kristin Hannah paints an incredibly vivid picture-through what I imagine was v thorough research-of the unsung heroes of the Vietnam War: the Women. It’s an epic war story, a coming of age tale, a champion of female friendship and veterans, and a look at a v complicated and heartbreaking time in our country. Made me fall back in love with historical fiction! All that praise aside, it did feel predictable at times and could have been shorter."
"Excellent book about the women who served in the Vietnam War. I did not have much info on this topic beyond what was taught in history class and of course they never spoke on the women who served now I am going to do a full deep dive into non fiction books in the women who served in Vietnam. As a military spouse, this hits close to home."
"Kristin Hannah delivers again with her historical fiction take on the women of Vietnam, specifically the nurses. Great, yet sad story, as many of her books are. I think this one is especially important because it will introduce thousands of fiction fans to the real stories of Vietnam, a generation long forgotten. She always weaves real people into her stories too."
"I was engrossed in this book up until Frankie returned from Vietnam. Unfortunately, this was at the halfway point of the book. There were parts of the last half of the book that dragged. "

"I really enjoyed Kristen Hannah’s historical fiction about three Army nurses who served in the Vietnam war. I had never read much about the Vietnam war and was struck by the horrors they experienced both for soldiers and Vietnamese citizens. Returning stateside was difficult as the American people resented the War and took it out on those who served. PTSD, drug addiction and depression plagued the returning soldiers. Kristen Hannah explored it all in this very well written depiction of this dark time in American history."
"20 year old Frankie follows her brother to serve as a combat nurse in Vietnam. This book chronicles her experiences there as well as her transition back to the states. This was the first Kristin Hannah book I’ve read and absolutely will not be the last. Why did I wait so long?! There were so many devastating turns…my heart couldn’t get a break. I couldn’t put this book down. It consumed me and now I have a book hangover. 5 stars truly is not enough. I highly, highly recommend. "
