My first Shirley Jackson book (I think) and I’m glad I read the Afterword by Jonathan Lethem because otherwise I would have been absolutely and completely lost. Jackson definitely pushes the envelope on cruel and singling out behavior, of the child murderer, and those who see that flaw and excuse it. Did Constance tend to her sister because she was spared? Or did she truly love her and understand her?"

luckylindy shared a tip "This is my favorite Shirley Jackson read so far. I truly loved Merricat as a character, I was rooting for that little homicidal maniac all the way. I loved that Jackson is subtle, she's not heavy-handed, and a lot of what the story is about is subtext. I think everyone gets something a little different when they read it and that speaks volumes. I'd absolutely read this again. I liked the movie as well."

I listened to the audio book so I was finished in about a day. I give it a 4/10"
