Matthew Perry
'There's never been a more honest or raw memoir . . . and it may just save lives' Daily Mail'Funny, fascinating, compelling . . . also a wonderful read for fans of Friends' The Times'HI, MY NAME IS MATTHEW, although you may know me by my full name. My friends call me Matty.'So begins the riveting story of acclaimed actor Matthew Perry, taking us along on his journey from childhood ambition to fame to addiction and recovery in the aftermath of a life-threatening health scare. Before the frequent hospital visits and stints in rehab, there was five-year-old Matthew, who travelled from Montreal to Los Angeles, shuffling between his separated parents; fourteen-year-old Matthew, who was a nationally ranked tennis star in Canada; twenty-four-year-old Matthew, who nabbed a coveted role as a lead cast member on the talked-about pilot then called Friends Like Us . . . and so much more.In an extraordinary story that only he could tell - and in the heartfelt, hilarious, and warmly familiar way only he could tell it - Matthew Perry lays bare the fractured family that raised him (and also left him to his own devices), the desire for recognition that drove him to fame, and the void inside him that could not be filled even by his greatest dreams coming true. But he also details the peace he's found in sobriety and how he feels about the ubiquity of Friends, sharing stories about his castmates and other stars he met along the way. Frank, self-aware, and with his trademark humour, Perry vividly depicts his lifelong battle with addiction and what fuelled it despite seemingly having it all.'An unflinching and often harrowing must-read for 90s pop culture fans' Guardian'Written with Chandler's trademark sarcasm and self-deprecation' Telegraph'A hopeful read . . . I started to think of [it] not as a celebrity memoir about addiction, but as an addiction memoir written by a man who understands his own history through the prism of showbiz' Independent

"I heard the audiobook and hearing it from Matthew himself was so heart breaking at first. I wasn’t a fan of the show and I didn’t watch it but its sad you never know about these things until the person speaks up, but Im glad he spoke up and he made his life better for himself before he passed. He was a great person from what I heard and whats in the book he was a kind person with a great heart, but the bad stuff just got to him before any of the good could in his life. Rest in peace. "

"Wow what a journey he went through. Addiction is a terrible disease :/ and it’s unfortunate to those who have to go through it. I love that he lays it all out. But some part were very cringe the way how he talks about others. I hope he find that happiness and that peace now in heaven. We miss you Matthew, you brought joy to so many of us. 🕊️🕊️"

"I give this a high rating, not because it’s well written ( I actually listened to the audiobook narrated by Mathew himself) because it’s his story in his words. The time line jumps around, but that’s indicative of his chaotic mind. This really really made me feel a great sadness to listen to after his death. This memoir was a huge foreshadowing of what was to come. It was sad because I was rooting for him, but I already knew the actual ending. I think it’s really brave to put yourself out there like that. I wish that life could have taken the direction he hoped for…….RIP Matty 😢"

"Wow…so many thoughts on this book! I could truly relate to many of his thoughts/feelings/emotions here but it changed the way I think of him as a person. He comes across as arrogant & selfish at times. Other times I think I wish I could’ve known him so I could’ve helped him. As someone who has had to struggle with opiate dependence following pancreas surgeries (I too have had to deal with pancreatitis, though mine is chronic since the age of 13 & not caused by alcoholism) I could definitely relate to his struggles. He was right when he said he learned nothing about opiate dependence/addiction in rehab. The book itself is a little frenetic & confusing. He should’ve gotten a better editor. Also, his recollection of things is a bit skewed. He contradicts himself many times. He seems to use OxyContin interchangeably with hydrocodone/Vicodin which are two different drugs. At one point he says he was on 1,800 mg of Oxy while in a different place he says he was on 1,800 mg of hydrocodone. He also seems to confuse Suboxone (buprenorphine + naloxone) & Subutex (buprenorphine) which are two (slightly) different medications. I hope people who are struggling with opiate addiction don’t get confused by reading this book because it’s extremely inaccurate & flawed. In the end, though, I’m glad he was finally happy and seemed to have found peace before his death."

"This is the first biography/autobiography I've ever read, and I loved every moment of it. I can relate to a lot of what Matthew Perry talks about herein. He really opens up, and is incredibly honest. Perry really is - pun intended here - an open book. I would call this a must read for any fan of Matthew Perry."

"TW: Addiction. You truly never know what kinds of demons people struggle with. What a devastating account of his struggle with addiction. I audibly gasped multiple times hearing what he was doing to himself. The brutal honesty of his fear, his anxiety, his selfishness, his insecurity, his lack of ability to control himself had me in tears. There were times it was difficult to follow the timeline as he jumped around chronologically. Heartbreaking listening to the audiobook, hearing his voice from the beyond. I hope he has found peace."
