"I’m not the biggest fan of Westerns, but when they’re done right, they can be one hell of a ride! The cast of this film was incredible, but it’s really Crowe and Bale who sell it. Their dynamic of animosity that slowly turns into begrudging respect was executed to perfection. The character arcs of both Wade and Evans were well-written and it was really satisfying to see Evans regain his honor and son’s respect and Wade get back in touch with some humanity. Crowe really made Wade an entertaining anti-hero. He was snide, taunting and intimidating. His scene at the end with Evans and his gang, though, almost moved me to tears. It made him a nuanced character. Even someone completely irredeemable can do one good thing. It’s almost like the saying “even a broken clock is right twice a day,” which I find fitting as the time of the train’s arrival is so central to the movie."
