"In 2016, my SO and I rewatched this together for the first time since we were very young. We both remembered this being live action. I guess I loved it so much, and it caught my imagination so much I wanted it to be real. What a shock. This is easily one of my favorite animated movies ever. Long live Superman. "
"This movie still is one of the best looking animated movies ever, every frame is so smooth and the cgi on the robot isn’t too bad considering when it was made. The anti war and gun sentiments are very well done, also of course not judging a giant robot by its big scary guns and always be empathetic to others. Just a beautifully animated film with a big heart that’s going to make you cry. "
"I’m honestly not sure I can bring myself to watch this again as an adult. This devastated me as a child. "

+ One of those movies that is slowly but surely going from overlooked gem to established classic. As it stands it is still overlooked, especially when considering the love Pixar and old Disney have, but I think this ranks with some of the best that any of them have to offer. The style of animation carries the simplicity of a children's book, but the story is both adventurous and even has moments with dark cautionary undertones. It not only deals with friendship, but also trauma and human paranoia. It takes place at the time of the Cold War where Nuclear Holocaust was a very real possibility, and though they show that time with underlying dark humor, the fear of those circumstances plays into how people act when they come across something they don't understand. Still, the humor is wonderful, with one of the best friendships between Hogarth Hughes and The Iron Giant. This film is pure joy and just as good as any live-action or animated movies out there.
-/+ I mentioned that the animation style had the simplicity of a children's book, but the style had to grow on me. I understood that it fit perfectly with the simplicity of the time period in which it takes place, and so I thought it was charming by the end, but it took me some time to get used to it.
- The only real negative is that I felt there was even more narrative gold to mine. One of the rare movies that could have been 10 to 15 minutes longer and still would have explored the depth of the friendship and the time period. I know there is a signature version with a couple more scenes added, and I would very much like to see it. If not for this small weakness it would get a perfect 5 ⭐ rating, but it's so strong and endearing that I listed it as one. There is a possibility that I'm being too picky about this.
NOTE: I would recommend a double feature between this movie and The Adventures Of Tintin. They both have miles of heart, are both overlooked, and are tons of fun!
