"July 16, 1945 "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”-
That quote from Robert Oppenheimer has haunted me since I heard it as a child.
How do we continue to live in and with our own humanity knowing that what we have wrought from our own mind is the demise of our world and the utter devastation of life itself? Oppenheimer knew that this was the moment that would change mankind forever. The very thought makes me weep openly at the enormity and the finality of it. I had a lump in my throat and tears in my eyelashes watching this movie. The question of what can we do versus should we do it is what I encourage everyone to ponder, always. "
"A great film based off the book American Prometheus, showing events of Oppenheimer’s life from his introduction of quantum physics into American academia and his social circles which he used to understand different group views. Worth watching as he helped create the atomic bomb at the Manhattan Project and the effects that came after, centering on two hearings!"
"Most of the reviews that I've read lean towards high praise for Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, my opinion is quite the opposite. I found this movie to be excruciatingly slow, unnecessarily long, and a relatively simple story made to be over complicated. The runtime could have easily been cut in half without sacrificing any crucial parts.
I also think that the cast was an absolutely stellar compilation of underutilized talent. So many well known and/or accomplished actors relegated to bit parts for no obvious reason other than they wanted to be associated with the film in some way.
I had no real urgency to see the movie in the theater so I waited for it to come to streaming on Peacock and I'm glad I did. This way I was able to watch it in installments and take some much needed breaks. Some good things about the movie: It's visually appealing. The look and feel of the 1940s was very well done. The aging makeup, whether it was conventional or CGI, was excellent too. All the actors involved did fine work in their respective roles. Also, the explosion at the bomb test site was impressive. But overall, I was disappointed. 6/10"
"Christopher Nolan has done it again. Oppenheimer is a certified masterpiece with a supernova cast. Murphy and RDJ were the clear standouts and I wouldn’t be surprised if they both have Oscar noms in their future. The direction, cinematography and writing of this film are all equally stunning. I especially enjoyed the metaphorical comparison between Oppenheimer and the myth of Prometheus. It was very fitting and gave me chills. I continually found myself on edge and holding my breath, especially during the Trinity test. Another element of this film that majorly impressed me was the intelligently written dialogue. Two instances in particular stand out in my mind. SPOILER ALERT: The first being a moment between Oppenheimer and Truman after the bombs have been dropped. Oppenheimer tells him - “Mr. President, I feel I have blood on my hands.” And Truman nonchalantly waves a handkerchief at him. The second was the final line of the movie. Oppenheimer tells Albert Einstein: Do you remember when we thought we might end the world?…. I think we did. My jaw dropped. All in all, Oppenheimer deserves any and all praise."
"It’s alright. The camera work was really good in the score was magnificent but I found it to be a little bit sluggish at some points, I found myself board and restless wanting the story to progress in someway to me personally I could use a trim. Now I found the creation and science behind the bomb itself to be fascinating and that’s where the movie shines. I know the movie isn’t about the bomb really but that to me where all interesting things happen with good story beats. The court room drama portion of the film was quite nice and done well but the intercutting could at points be lackluster and confusing. Gorgeous movie but not for me personally."
"I understand why this story was made into a movie, but as someone who was not at all familiar with it before watching, this was one of the more confusing plotlines to follow. It wasn't until the very end that I realized there were in fact three timelines woven together, the third of which had me questioning the other two (unless I seriously misunderstood the movie and made up a third one, which only proves my point further). It was also excessively long. About an hour in, I needed a good break, cause the dialogue was also just too much for me. I don't understand why even behind closed doors, characters can't speak casually, it was as if they were constantly trying to impress each other, and I don't even mean the scientific terms, (but maybe that's just me). That's not to say there was nothing good about the movie, but as a whole experience the positives do not stand out very well. 6/10 🤯"
