NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A princess in exile, a shapeshifting dragon, six enchanted cranes, and an unspeakable curse... Drawing from fairy tales and East Asian folklore, this original fantasy from the author of Spin the Dawn is perfect for fans of Shadow and Bone."A dazzling fairytale full of breathtaking storytelling." --Stephanie Garber, New York Times bestselling author of CaravalShiori'anma, the only princess of Kiata, has a secret. Forbidden magic runs through her veins. Normally she conceals it well, but on the morning of her betrothal ceremony, Shiori loses control. At first, her mistake seems like a stroke of luck, forestalling the wedding she never wanted. But it also catches the attention of Raikama, her stepmother.A sorceress in her own right, Raikama banishes the young princess, turning her brothers into cranes. She warns Shiori that she must speak of it to no one: for with every word that escapes her lips, one of her brothers will die.Penniless, voiceless, and alone, Shiori searches for her brothers, and uncovers a dark conspiracy to seize the throne. Only Shiori can set the kingdom to rights, but to do so she must place her trust in a paper bird, a mercurial dragon, and the very boy she fought so hard not to marry. And she must embrace the magic she's been taught all her life to forswear--no matter what the cost. Weaving together elements of The Wild Swans, Cinderella, the legend of Chang E, and the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, Elizabeth Lim has crafted a fantasy like no other, and one that will stay with readers long after they've turned the last page. "Good character growth with the female lead without erasing or warping her personality completely. There are some good twists and a light romance. Love how magic is handled and looking forward to the second book."

"I really want to read this book, but I’m not a fan of lots of inner dialogue. Does this book have that, and if so is it something I could look past?"

"4.75 stars - The folktale and whimsical elements of Six Crimson Cranes draws readers in and makes them never want to leave. Once the story got rolling I became engrossed and could not wait to finish. The handling of complicated relationships was perfect and added a lot of nuance to how the ending is interpreted. I also really enjoyed the characterization of Seryu. However, there were certain characters like Takkan’s mom that dragged the story down due to their lack of development. She is supposed the be the ruler of a kingdom yet cannot for one second think for herself? It was the little things that pulled me out of the story. I’m excited to read the next installment!

Thank you to Edelweiss for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review."

"This was one of the most well-written books I’ve seen on Booktok. It was absolutely magical and I loved the fairytale elements. I would say some parts were hard to read, but that’s just because of how emotionally invested I became in this story. I felt anxiety and anticipation, anger and frustration. Also the climax of this story!! It was full of so many thrilling twists and turns. I just couldn’t put the book down."
