"An absolute banger of a film! Despite a standard script, Sam Raimi’s trademark visual style and camerawork is once again utilized to full effect and is easily the MVP of this film. Phenomenal set pieces, production values, editing, score, and of course the cinematography. This also boasts a great ensemble cast, ranging from Sharon Stone (who also produced the film, in addition to giving a legitimately great performance here) to Gene Hackman (whose performance was reminiscent of his Oscar-winning one in UNFORGIVEN) to the then young and up-and-coming stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe (the latter of whom delivers a convincing performance of a former gunfighter seeking redemption). This is a case where the stylistic direction and stellar casting (aided by the production design) really can elevate a rather standard (and even corny) script to something truly riveting. Very much deserves to be appreciated as part of Sam Raimi’s filmography. I’m glad this is getting much deserved appreciation now. Highly recommended."
