Young Shakespeare is forced to stage his latest comedy, "Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate's Daughter," before it's even written. When a lovely noblewoman auditions for a role, they fall into forbidden love -- and his play finds a new life (and title). As their relationship progresses, Shakespeare's comedy soon transforms into tragedy.

"This is a rewatch. This is actually an extremely well-made and executed film that pays a rather beautiful tribute to William Shakespeare. An extremely witty script along with graceful direction that utilizes a fictional story with a real person to create an extremely captivating play-like narrative that cleverly incorporates Easter eggs to classic Shakespeare plays (very reminiscent of AMADEUS in terms of storytelling structure). All aspects of filmmaking are in top form, ranging from the writing and direction to the production design, costumes, score, editing, and most especially the performances (Geoffrey Rush, Judi Dench (a very well-deserved Oscar win with just 8 minutes of screen time), Joseph Fiennes, and Gwyneth Paltrow are the MVPs).
This film has been unfairly derided IMO for beating SAVING PRIVATE RYAN at the Oscars for Best Picture in part due to the comedic tone. I feel the win was extremely well-deserved not only because I thought SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE was better, but it was much more narratively cohesive as well (while impressive technically, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN had issues in maintaining narrative momentum for me, on top of emotional manipulation to the point I felt that it was telling the audiences to cry at specific moments). Harvey Weinstein's involvement was extremely unfortunate, but I firmly believe SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE deserved it despite him, and the film deserves a massive reevaluation IMO. Very highly recommended."
