"“You're afraid to dive into the plasma pool, aren't you? You're afraid to be destroyed and recreated, aren't you?…But you only know society's straight line about the flesh. You can't penetrate beyond society's sick, gray, fear of the flesh. Drink deep, or taste not the plasma spring! Y'see what I'm saying?”
4⭐️ rewatch. THE ultimate 80s body horror flick! Forget about all the terrorizers and serial killers. This is true horror in the most personal sense. A sad horrific allegory of so many things that strike humans at our primordial core and reflect our deepest fears ~ pain, disease, aging, deterioration, dying, addiction. Which is what makes it so effective as horror. Yes it’s the gore but also the humanity.
Jeff Goldblum and Gina Davis imbue it all into their characters. The Fly is a monster yet we deeply identify with him..it. And with the woman who loves him, helpless in watching his gruesome transformation. We are repulsed, horrified and heartbroken. Gina wrenched me dry in her grief and, as a woman (you’ll see), her raw desperation. Jeff transfixed me in his emotional transition from awkward and ambitious to maniacal and power-mad, ultimately pathetic and desperate, poetically mirroring his degenerating physical one.
The practical effects here are some of the craziest put to screen. Honestly it’s so gross I couldn’t stop shouting at the screen in disgust. The make up design won a well deserved Oscar. Of course the effects are obvious but try telling that to your brain. I’ll take practical over cgi any day and for the 80s it was superlative.
This film still had the same effect on me. To be sure it’s no campy 80s romp but IS swathed in a light veneer of 80s cheese. Be warned it’s a good half hour before taking off but once it gets going .. let the grotesquerie commence. And the last half hour! Riveting, revolting and terribly, poignantly devastating. Mainly because THE FLY is not anything if not a classic, tragic love story. A really, REALLY gruesome one. "
"This movie is so cool! The effects are amazing it feels like you could touch it..like you can feel the slime you just know what it smell like in there and it’s not good it’s that Visceral. It still feels like a 1950s movie which is neat cause it still feels 80’s. Also Jeff Goldblum is great. 👍🏻👍🏻"
"I love the original movie but this remake is very well done!"
