And, sometimes, they prey on the living.Don't miss the highly-anticipated sequel, Hell Bent.

"Super different than her Grishaverse books. Similar to a lot of the other reviewers, I had a really hard time staying interested at the beginning. However, I'm glad I kept reading because it ended up being really good! I still wouldn't say I loved as I loved her other books. One of my favorite things of her other books was the character building and how you just really fall in love with each character and I just didn't feel that as much with this one. It sets up for the sequel and I am going to read it. Hoping the beginning of the second one is not as hard to get through since the story is already going. "
"Bardugos first foray into adult fantasy was solid. Liked the Yale setting."

"Though I expected a darker nature to this book, I was surprised by Bardugos macabre and bitter writing. I’m not typically a fan of this style, it’s reminiscent of Gideon the Ninth, which I similarly enjoyed yet didn’t exactly love. This book is pretty drawn out, and though it picks up pace towards the end I’m not drawn to read the second book. Could easily be read as a stand alone, includes a morally grey MC with ritualistic magic and dark academia vibes. "
"This book spares no time jumping into the story. As someone who is not knowledgeable with the witchy lingo, it took a minute to familiarize myself with what was going on. However, this book had so much going on, so it was never a dull read. A number of plot twists are built into one another until revealing the end, but there's still more to come. Already have the sequel on the way. 🙌🏼 1/12."
"I grabbed this book after seeing so many people talk about the sequel when it released. I typically read in the mystery/thriller genre and I was skeptical about this book fitting my preferences seeing as it is mostly referenced as a fantasy. However I will say there was enough mystery to keep me interested and I would even say there is a bit of a thriller-styled ending. I enjoyed all of the fantastical flair of this story but who does love magic and the paranormal? The story starts slow and the initial world building was a bit confusing at first, but that seems to be a consensus amongst readers. Having reached the end, I don’t think I would be able to complete an accurate timeline of events which is another qualm I have with this story. The chapters are labeled by season but it was hard for me to keep track of which events fell where in the overall timeline, but I don’t think it hindered my understanding (or enjoyment) while reading the story.
